Hey Portland, just saw that starting November 1, Heretic Coffee is offering free breakfast to anyone losing SNAP benefits. No proof needed and no questions asked. via Instagram
From an interview with a costumed Portland protester. Portland rules and this is spot on: “There’s been a nice overall whimsy that has shown up. The frog is amazing. We had a bunch of other inflatable people here last night, too. I saw people playing Twister the other day. What they rely on is fear. So by coming out in an absurdist manner, it speaks to them, to some extent, that we’re actually not that afraid. It also dismantles their narrative a little bit. When they try to describe this situation as “war-torn,” it becomes much harder to take them seriously when they have to post a video saying [U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security] Kristi Noem is up on the balcony staring over the Antifa Army and it’s, like, eight journalists and five protesters and one of them is in a chicken suit.” — An Interview With the Portland Chicken (archived)
Summer Roundup
Whoosh, there went July and August. And almost September. I did remember the 21st night of September, though. It’s been a weird summer, lots of ups and downs. A good chunk of my blahs are from the weight of still taking Covid precautions while…
IndieWeb Summit 2019
Last weekend I was in Portland again for the IndieWeb Summit. This is one of my favorite events each year. I always get inspired seeing what people are doing on their personal sites. Some of the tools they’re building feel like magic when you see…
Chris Aldrich mentioned it was his #indieweb anniversary today, which made me wonder when I first encountered indieweb. Turns out it was six years ago! I remember being excited about the idea of federated comments. I had no idea I would be getting involved with the community for years to come, though. In that time, I've organized some meetups, traveled to several IndieWebCamps, and even co-organized an IndieWebCamp. I've met a lot of great people through it all and have had a lot of fun. I've made some good improvements to my site and learned things that have helped my professional web work, too. You should join us! Check out indieweb.org, say hello in the chat, and join us at the IndieWeb Summit this June in Portland.
XOXO: Yes, you do belong here
In September I attended XOXO Festival for the first time. I’ve heard great things about the festival over the years. I almost attended in 2016 but I couldn’t quite make it work and decided I would go the following year. Then they announced they were…
I think it's a good sign when walking into the XOXO venue they're playing one of my favorite bands, @MUTEMATH. It's also been a great day around Portland and meeting people. Y'all are so friendly and cool!
Hello, end of summer
I found it funny that as soon as we hit Labor Day, the San Diego weather got overcast. I can’t complain, because it’s still San Diego and generally gorgeous. This summer I have been more focused on writing code, microformats parsing issues, and some…

.@nprgreene On @UpFirst, “mostly uneventful” is a weird descriptor for the Portland police seriously wounding by shooting grenades into the anti-racist crowd. They would have killed a person if not for their helmet. @rachelnpr @nprinskeep @noelking
Great summary of the IndieWeb Summit by @schmarty! Join us next week in Portland. https://martymcgui.re/2018/06/20/140442/
Thanks for sharing indieweb.org. We have the IndieWeb Summit coming up June 26-27 in Portland if you'd like to join! https://2018.indieweb.org
An Invitation to IndieWeb Summit
Hey friends, if you have (or want!) a personal website, you should consider joining us at the 2018 IndieWeb Summit, June 26–27 in Portland, Oregon. I have been attending for several years now. It’s a really friendly, collaborative group of people and…
You live in Portland. Aren’t tractors the next hip vehicle? :D
IndieWeb Appreciation
This past weekend I attended the second IndieWeb Summit in Portland. This was my fifth IndieWebCamp event, which got me thinking about the things that keep me coming back. One thing I appreciate about the IndieWeb community is that we don’t tell…
Weather in Portland is amazing today. High of 80 vs 102 yesterday. Let's schedule this type of weather for next year! #indieweb
Have had a productive day and really good Portland noms so far at IndieWeb Leaders Summit!
IndieWebCamp Bellingham Day 1
I think our first day of IndieWebCamp Bellingham went pretty well. I have been to several of the Portland IndieWebCamps, but this was my first time helping to organize one. I always get nervous before events I've planned, no matter how detailed my…
Sixteen Things I Did in 2016
1. I stopped making these annual lists. They were a fun tradition for several years, but it’s time for a change. A few years ago I heard about Anil Dash’s quiet experiment to only retweet women for an entire year. I thought that was really…
IndieWeb Summit Day 1
There was an interesting discussion tonight where Shane challenged each of us to write more long-form posts. He told us how he enjoyed reading Tantek’s recent articles about the movie Tomorrowland and missed Tantek writing longer posts. Thus the…
